Set Point Laboratories moving forward with new Cape-based water lab

Set Point Laboratories- a world-class laboratory service, best known for being a formidable partner in the mining and water industry, has announced the opening of its new Cape Town based water laboratory in Milnerton to supply water services and laboratory analyses to the region.

“We have seen a spike in the demand for water testing services in the drought stricken Cape,” Thelma Horsfield, General Manager Set Point Laboratories. This will continue as Capetonians find ways to meet their ever-growing demand for water over the next 10 years. Set Point’s expertise includes the ability to test drinking and potable water for compliance with the National Drinking water standard SANS 241. The lab also tests bottled water for compliance with SANS 1657.

“The Mother City will be one of the most progressive areas in the world in terms of becoming an innovative water-sensitive society using a range of different water supplies, and Set Point will be a vital service in testing the water quality,” explains Thelma.

The Cape region is already considering alternative ways to meet their needs, including making use of ground water, reusing water and desalination in a R5.4-billiion strategy to avoid the possibility of “Day Zero”. At the centre of the plan is the use of rain-fed dams, with the City expecting this cheaper solution to provide two-thirds of the needed water supply.

On the industrial side, Set Point’s years of experience in testing environmental mine, surface and waste water for compliance with the National Water Act will also extend to the Cape region, and the new laboratory will have the capability to test industrial effluent for compliance with municipal by-laws.

The new water laboratory is operated by highly qualified and motivated staff, who deliver fully comprehensive and professional testing services to Cape-based clients. Attentive, personalised customer focus and a reputation for efficient turnaround time has made the SANAS ISO17025 accredited Set Point brand unique to the industry.

The company is currently a Level 2 BBBEE value-adding supplier and progress in this area is a critical part of the long-term plan to be a sustainable business that actively participates in real economic transformation.

The new Cape water laboratory supplements Set Point’s already successful Johannesburg-based business.
